Two friends share learnings from over 300 week-long cancer retreats
Join Host Michael Lerner in conversation with Janie Brown, founder of Callanish Society—a grassroots non-profit organization in Vancouver, BC, for people living with, and dying from, cancer.
Janie Brown RN, MSN, MA, was raised in Scotland and educated with a masters in psychology at St. Andrews University, and then a masters in nursing at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. She worked for many years as an oncology nurse and clinical nurse specialist at BC Cancer in Vancouver. In 1995, inspired by the Cancer Help Program at Commonweal, she founded the Callanish Society, a grassroots nonprofit organization for people living with, and dying from, cancer, based in Vancouver. She co-produced a documentary film: I’m Still Here: Young Adults Living Life with Recurrent Cancer. Janie’s book Radical Acts of Love: Twenty Conversations to Inspire Hope at the End of Life (Canongate, UK, 2020) describes her work of 30 years working with families living with cancer.

- Overview of thyroid cancer, including patient-reported outcomes, prognosis, and initial treatment
- Decision to treat or observe advanced/high-risk thyroid cancers and an overview of treatment for these cancers
- Doctor-patient relationship, shared decision-making, and resources and advocacy

Ask the Expert: Mindset Q&A September 6th
Join Mindfulness Instructor Margaret Fletcher who will summarize key points from the Mindset module of the Anticancer Lifestyle Program. She will also review and answer questions from the audience. Please note that completion of the Mindset module is not required—however, it’s highly recommended—you’ll get a lot more out of the Q&A that way.
