In this short video, Thomas Smith, MD, Professor of Oncology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Director of Palliative Medicine, Johns Hopkins Medicine, discusses how he evaluates cancer pain and treats it with pharmaceuticals including acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), gabapentin, venlafaxine, pregabalin, nortriptyline, and opioids.

“You used to think it was just the cancer pushing things out of the way or the cancer damaging the nerves, but it turns out if you stick a really small needle right down next to where the cancer is in the bone and pull out a tiny drop of fluid and then inject that fluid into the bloodstream or someplace else in the body, the whole nervous system goes on high alert.” Watch the video to hear more:
