Berberine, an active ingredient in several plants, shows good effects in managing high blood sugar and excess body weight, plus lower risk of colorectal cancer.

Berberine at a glance

Berberine is a compound found in many plants, including European barberry, goldenseal, goldthread, Oregon grape, phellodendron, and tree turmeric. It is available as a dietary supplement.

Berberine shows benefits in some body terrainthe internal conditions of your body, including nutritional status, fitness, blood sugar balance, hormone balance, inflammation and more factors—especially high blood sugar—plus lower risk of colorectal cancer. So far, the only evidence for improving treatment outcomes with berberine is in lab and animal studies, which is called “preclinical evidence.” While this evidence is very promising, it is still extremely preliminary.

“There are significant barriers to the absorption of berberine. Microemulsions, liposomes, micelles, and other nanoparticles have been used as part of the nanoparticle drug delivery system in recent years to boost the bioavailability of berberine.”1Samadi P, Sarvarian P et al. Berberine: a novel therapeutic strategy for cancer. IUBMB Life. 2020;72(10):2065-2079. Some of these derivatives and formulations and the evidence of their use in improving cancer treatment outcomes are summarized in Are you a health professional? › Many of these derivatives are not currently available for clinical use.
